Nations

Nation: Klahoose
Details:

The ancestral lands of the Klahoose First Nation include Toba Inlet and Ramsay Arm on the mainland, East and West Redonda Islands and much of Cortes Island.  In the past, the most important Klahoose communities were located in the mainland inlets but today Squirrel Cove on the east coast of Cortes Island is the primary population centre.

Nation: Comox
Details:

Just as the ‘Mainland Comox’ are comprised of multiple independent nations (Klahuse, Sliammon and Homalco) so too, did the ‘Island Comox’ encompass multiple independent groups who shared the same language.  The names of only some of these are remembered today, but at one time there were as many as 10 different Island Comox nations.

The traditional territories of the Homalco/Xwemalhkwu First Nation include all of Bute Inlet and much of the drainages of the Southgate and Homathko rivers which flow into the head of Bute Inlet.

Nation: Sliammon
