The craftsmanship of this cradle is striking. The quality of the roots, the symmetry of the cradle’s shape, the uniformity of the slat sizes and stitching all suggest that it was made by a master of the craft.
Technique: Slat coil and bundle coil construction. Basket walls are 7 slats high and rimmed with a single row of bundle coiling. The basket base, like the walls, is 7 slats wide and rimmed by bundle coiling. Beaded designs combined to form a Chevron pattern around the head end of the cradle.
Material: Cedar wood slats, split spruce or cedar root, canary or bear grass, bitter cherry bark dyed black or perhaps maiden hair fern stems.
